Information & Troubleshooting : Exhausts

Your exhaust system performs four key functions:

1. Reduces engine noise
2. Channels poisonous gasses away from the passengers in the car
3. Improves power output
4. Reduces fuel consumption

How Long Can I Expect My Exhaust To Last?

The Lifespan of your exhaust depends on how far and how often you drive your car, rather than the length of time it has been fitted.

Vehicles used for short trips around town tend to corrode their exhausts in a much shorter time and distance than cars used predominantly for long journeys. This is because on short journeys, certain parts of the system remain relatively cold, giving exhaust gases a chance to condense and form pools of corrosive acid inside the system. So your exhaust corrodes both from the inside out and from the outside in.

If any part of your exhaust is found to be rusting through, the whole exhaust could be suspect and should be thoroughly inspected.

If any one part has corroded, it is likely that other parts of a similar age will be in similar condition.

Finally, it is important to ensure that all the hangers and brackets used to secure the exhaust to the underside of the car are in good condition. Corroded, fractured or missing hangers and brackets can cause undue stress which can lead to premature failure.

Troubleshooting.

You can usually tell when something is wrong with your car exhaust due to the noise its making.

A loud "roar" type noise would usually mean a hole in a pipe in the exhaust system
A loud rattling noise may indicate something is loose or touching part of the exhaust system
A tinkling noise may indicate a problem in the silencer

If you have any of the above symptoms or any concerns at all we offer a free exhaust check and qoute if repairs are needed.
